Independence / founding: Fifth Republic established 1958; Revolution of 1789
From Roman Gaul and the Frankish kingdom grew one of Europe's oldest nation-states. The 1789 Revolution overthrew the monarchy and exported ideals of liberty across Europe. After Napoleon, a turbulent 19th century, and the World Wars, France built the Fifth Republic (1958) and became a founding pillar of the European Union.
